The Ultimate Superbike Challenge

The Ultimate Superbike Challenge was a fantastic event by current SA standards, even the weather was at its best.  The Friday practice gave the competitors an insight into the track conditions for Saturday.  It was very hot with crystal clear blue skies.  I can remember coming to the Phakisa Motocross circuit and was really amazed by the fact that Welkom has very few traffic lights, but plenty of traffic circles and a very cool neat town.
The turnout for Friday morning practice was great with the pits being full.  It was great to have the boys there selling and changing tyres and even lock wiring for competitors, when they were taking their bikes through scrutineering.  It was great to see some of the competitors who went out of their way to set up really professional pit areas and take great pride in their trucks and trailers, Trolan standing out and being one of them.

I was very impressed to see the amount of ZX10 competitors and later had the opportunity to chat to Johan Fourie.  I had the opportunity to have a long chat to Tony Carter, who was brought out to South Africa by Superbike Rentals. Tony runs a motorcycle lifestyle magazine in the UK,  I think his plan is to try and encourage motorcycle enthusiasts to come out to South Africa for a fairly inexpensive motorcycle riding experience, I suppose we should not be that surprised when the rate of exchange is R19 to 1GBP.  Tony seemed to have lots of fun as can be seen by the photo below and got on well with the umbrella girls.  The TV for the event was very generously sponsored by The Freestate Tourism department.  It was fantastic to see the local enthusiasm and interest in the Phakisa Freeway Circuit.  The organisation and professionalism was very good, we had Bike SA, Simon and Donovan Fourie give us their new Nissan GTR as the Pace Car and believe you me that car can go when it wants to. To watch the grid formation and line-up was as spectacular as Moto GP or WSBK.  We had it all, the Pace Car, the umbrella girls and the medic crew following behind when the grid took off the line, it was awesome.

I am sure that the regional and national competitors will be disappointed when they see exactly what they missed out on.  The days racing was great as can be seen by the photos below.  The announcing was done by Grant Foley, which was also broadcast live on Capital Sound radio, all the sponsors’ banners and the whole hype proved to be a big success.   Fiona rounded up the lady competitors with the umbrella girls and made an awesome pic to entice future male participants to the next Ultimate Superbike Challenge.   Loumari Grobler was offered a great sponsorship opportunity by Goldfields Casino in Welkom, good luck to her for the 2015 season.  There was 260 tickets sold for the prize giving dinner and it was a great success.   WOMZA would like to thank all the sponsors and all the hard work and effort that Andre Neethling and his team, from MRA put into this event.
In the next week or so, we will be sending out further information on our Superbike plans for the 2015 season.
